The Government originally launched this scheme in 2015. On 1st February 2023, the union finance minister Nirmala Sita Raman launched PMKVY 4.0 to skill lacs of youths within the next 3 years. Through this scheme job training and industry partners will be emphasized. Other than that the courses will be aligned according to the needs of the industry.

PMKVY 4.0 will also cover new-age courses for industries 4.0 like coding, AI, robotics, IoT, 3D printing, drones, and soft skills. In the budget, the government has also proposed to set up 30 Skill India international centres across different states to skill youths for international opportunities. The government is also planning to expand the digital ecosystem for skilling through Skill India digital platform
