What is Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana?

For the benefit of farmers, the government is implementing the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) throughout the nation. In contrast to the significantly higher premium under the previous crop insurance, the premium level under the PMFBY programme is fixed at 2% for Kharif crops and 1.5 % for Rabi crops. On February 18, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced this farm insurance and crop insurance programme. All interested farmers may register online for agriculture insurance at pmfby.gov.in, the official website of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, where registration lines for crop insurance for the PMFBY 2022 are now open. As of February 4, 2022, more than 36 crore farmer applications had been covered under PMFBY, and more than Rs. 1,07,059 crore in claims had already been paid.

Objectives of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana

On February 18, 2022, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), which is entering its seventh year, will begin a doorstep delivery campaign. To provide crop insurance coverage to the farmers under Meri Policy Mere Hath in all the implementing states, the PMFBY will begin a doorstep distribution campaign. The campaign strives to make sure that every farmer is well-informed on their policies, land records, and the claim and grievance redressal process under PMFBY. A flagship programme of the Indian government, PMFBY intends to offer financial assistance to farmers who suffer crop loss or damage as a result of natural catastrophes.

Benefits and Features of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana

The following are some of the main characteristics and advantages of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana 2024:

  • For PMFBY, all farmers pay the same premium price.
  • A small portion of the premium goes to the farmer. Government insurance covers the remainder. Farmers will benefit from this since they will be able to get complete coverage at a cheaper premium cost.
  • For crops in Kharif, Rabi, and Annual and Commercial, farmer premium contributions are substantially reduced by 2%, 1.5%, and 5%, respectively.
  • Technology is used to record and upload information on product loss and damage, reducing the time it takes to resolve claims.
  • Beneficiaries’ enrollment, plan awareness-building, and claim processing are all handled by one insurance provider.
  • If their crop has local losses, farmers may be eligible for on-account claim payments under the programme.
  • Plot-by-plot evaluation of yield loss in the case of a cyclone, cyclonic rains, or unseasonal rainfall across the nation, resulting in damage to harvested crop left in the field in a “cut and spread” state for up to two weeks (14 days) after harvesting for the sole purpose of drying.
  • In the event of severe weather and out-of-season precipitation, crop damage is assessed on a plot-by-plot basis.
  • This tactic will greatly encourage the use of technology. Farmers will no longer experience claim payment delays thanks to the usage of cell phones to collect and submit crop-cutting data. Remote sensing will also be used in this strategy to cut down on the number of crop-cutting tests.
